...pondering Isadora. Was just writing to Brian Nishii - westwell productions - my longtime collaborator and founding member of IMC. He didn't want to move up to Northampton, MA for 2 years while I pursued my MFA - some 'like-a-brother' he is, huh! No actuallly, he's been up twice, which is more than I can say for other biologically related members of my fam. the email composing became a bit of a rumination that I thought was worth keeping track of...
i'm glad to be working with isadora and i'm having a blast working on this piece but i feel like my actual understanding of izzy still stinks. i'm learning a bit by doing but i haven't hit izzy as hard as i expected i would. it's been a busy life and job searches have supplanted all of what was supposed to be my daily izzy practice. so i feel very cliche and simple minded in my use of this great technology. on the other hand. i've definitely moved the technology question and our own multimedia familiarity farther - which feels good. i know up here mostly everyone is just going to go - cooool - to most of the izzy effects which is mostly what they are...effects. i feel like i don't just lack technical know how. i've been lacking vision about how to make the izzy stuff as vital as everything else. or maybe it is as vital and i want it to be more important but can't because there are too many moving parts in the piece. i don't know if I'm making a truly integrated multi-media work, but i know that i'm definitely making one that uses various interesting elements of technology and not only the 'razzle-dazzle' effects/live processing of Izzy, but also the notion of surveillance that is coming through the 4 infrared wireless cameras we're switching between around the space, and the notion of play and mobility that will come through with the groundcrew/Mobile IM component, and then the gaming/algorithmic/improvisational structure of the whole piece reflecting a new media cultural presentation of how we like to be entertained these days. as it is my thesis and i have to write a defense of it - i've got a bunch of theory running through my head about "Liveness" and "interactivity" and "lurker/surfer/player" and socialogical implications of texting and what not... rambling - go work on Izzy StOP TALKING START DOING = actually what i really do need to do soon, very soon is stop doing and start writing but with my smart hat on...
